“World’s Your Oyster” provokes a nuanced dialogue on the value and perception of birth control. Central to the piece, a birth control pill is enshrined like a rare and valuable pearl. The shell, crafted from cheesecloth and coated with polyurethane, juxtaposes softness with a hard, pearlescent sheen. This material and symbolic interplay compels viewers to contemplate the multifaceted nature of birth control, encapsulating both its empowering potential and the complexities it brings to women’s lives.

Cece King –
Cece King is a multi-hyphenate creative whose work seeks to complicate the surface benevolence of everyday systems and objects by questioning the underlying philosophies that brought them into existence. Her recent sculpture series birthCONTROL uses unexpected material and symbolic interplay to provoke dialogue around binaries such as pleasure and suffering, agency and control, dynamics that shape the female experience. As part of several ongoing film projects, Cece is now directing Si La Isla Quiere (“Island Willing”), a documentary exploring environmental stewardship on Chile’s most biodiverse island and interlocking systems that seek to sever humanity’s intrinsic bond with nature. A Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude graduate of Dartmouth College with a degree in Geography and Middle Eastern Studies, Cece was recognized nationally as a John Robert Lewis Scholar (2022) for her social impact work, which was formally lauded in Congress. Previously, she served as a voting member of Manhattan Community Board 8, representing her 230,000-person district (2018-2019) after receiving a City Council Citation for her contributions.
