The commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, isn’t a household name the way, say, the secretary of state is. (Can you name the current one? Yeah, you’re not alone. It’s Margaret Hamburg.) But the post is absurdly important, regulating about a quarter of every dollar spent in the United States, according to The New York Times. Hamburg is stepping down, and President Obama has put forth his new nomination, a cardiologist most associated with Duke University who currently serves the number two spot in the FDA. So!
